Dunkirk, NY Climate Information

The City of Dunkirk is located on eastern Lake Erie, directly on the warm water, sheltered harbor provided by Chadwick Bay. Dunkirk has some of the sunniest and driest summers of any area in the Northeast, but still has enough rain to keep vegetation green.   Summers are marked by plentiful sunshine and moderate humidity and temperature. Dunkirk receives, on average, over 65% of possible sunshine in June, July and August.

Typically obscured by the notoriety of areas winter snow is the fact that this region of the country benefits from other lake effects such as the cooling southwest breezes off Lake Erie in summer that gently temper the warmest days. The stabilizing effect of Lake Erie continues to inhibit thunderstorms and enhance sunshine in the immediate area through most of July.

The Dunkirk region has a reputation for snowy winters, however many area residents appreciate the seasons directly before and after the winter season the most. . These transitional seasons in Dunkirk are brief, yet showcase a large portion of the area's natural beauty.

The winters in Western New York are generally cold and snowy, but are changeable and include frequent thaws as well. Over half of the annual snowfall comes from the lake effect process and is very localized. Lake effect snow occurs when cold air crosses the relatively warm lake waters and becomes saturated, creating clouds and precipitation downwind. The lake snow machine starts as early as mid-October, peaks in December, then virtually shuts down after Lake Erie freezes in mid to late January. The snow does not typically impair the city's operation, and the local infrastructure is well equipped for snow removal and maintenance.

The Dunkirk area is fortunate to experience all four seasons in their full glory and splendor.  From temperate summers, to beautiful fall evenings and foliage, to a traditionally "white" holiday season, to the warming sunshine and bloom of spring this area truly offers a comprehensive taste of Mother Nature.
